September 15 - Artistic Visions
Today in class we critiqued everyone's "What is Art?" project.. Students created several images, mostly with Photoshop, that explored and collided artistic visions, surreal landscapes and styles of their favorite creatives.
For the next phase of this project, students were asked to find and artist of their choice and create the Project as described below.
1. Create a written biographical sketch of an artist. (about 300 words)
2. In the second phase of he project students will create a series of 3 works
3. Create a new page on your class portfolio called Artistic Visions and post your biography and the works you create for this project on this page.
4. Write an artist's statement of about 200 words describing the project and what techniques you learned along the way. Post to the bottom of that page.
1. Create a written biographical sketch of an artist. (about 300 words)
- In this biography tell the audience about the context and time the artist was working in.
- What were the methods and media the artist used?
- What are some notable works?
- What cultural impact did the artist have and how is their work still relevant today?
2. In the second phase of he project students will create a series of 3 works
- Use the above chosen artist's style in a medium of your choice.
- Blend in a contemporary issue of your own choosing to update the content of the works.
- Make is visual and sonic if possible.
3. Create a new page on your class portfolio called Artistic Visions and post your biography and the works you create for this project on this page.

Generative Media - Today in class we defined generative media and created a shared Google doc to crowdsource the details about the topic. We then took some time to explore who created the conceptual framework for it and who's working in it.
The class was asked to explore options and apps to create visual generative media as well as audio. Many folks found great interactive apps but as we learned, generative media is a system based conceptual approach to making art and music. It is a algorithm that takes a few basic instructions and complex patterns emerge.
We then took a walk around the building to explore possible locations for the installation of your generative media displays. As a group, many of you were looking toward projection and speakers to show your work on public surfaces.
Many of you will be working off-site. That is also a good option. Think about an installation in a room and how light and sound can alter the psychological space.
No matter where you have chosen to display your work make sure you document it well with stills and video. You can shoot some selfie video talking about the installation and the process that went into it.
Next Monday evening I will be at my office between 5:00 and 6:30 and can help anyone with gear at that time. I will be in class from 6:30 to 9:00. So during that time you can start working on your projects and at 9:00 I can assist you with any technical support I can. If you have any technical questions or conceptual questions feel free to email me. I will be at school Thursday the 30th and I have a couple of small projectors if people want to take those out and experiment.
Next class we will review your artistic visions project and the generative media project. We will have some more class time to do some of those testimonial videos about the two projects so we can include artist statement videos on your sites.
As with all projects in this class.. be chill. This is about experimenting, trying completely new approaches to communication and expression and not everything leads to a predictable end. Pushing the boundaries of the way you think IS THE POINT. You will run into technical limitations and be questioning your choices and that is all part of the process. I think it's far better to run into those limitations than to not try and surpass them.
I think the main goal here is to surprise yourself with the results.
Trust your instincts and avoid the obvious.

OCTOBER 6
Today in class we broke into collaborative pairs and reworked our generative media assignments into installation art pieces. That collaborative process is so important in Media production. Many of you took elements of what you created individually and brought them together with your partners work to create something completely new. We then found facets of the building to project our work on and created lively installations on walls that were crying out for a little creative love.
Your homework for October 13th:
Feel free to grab the stills and video from my Google photos album.
I sent the link through blackboard.
For your portfolio you should add the new media we created today to your "generative media" page. It is critical that you write up a robust "what I learned" analysis of this project and add it to that page as well.
We will come back to this project and your write up will be very important.
Please do that now while it's still fresh in your mind.
Next week is midterms and I need all of your projects organized on your portfolio. Please do this before class!
You should have a gallery of images from this class on your home page. Try 9 pictures in a gallery. Click the image in the gallery and add a link to the page it's related to. You might want to caption the pictures so people get an idea of where the image is going. Captioning can be done right in the gallery element is weebly.
There are nine classes left this semester.
I'm planning the following concepts and projects. We will expand or contract as needed.

October 13 - Green Screen Experiments
Yesterday in class we re-filmed our "artistic visions" projects with the green screen. For those of you that have not used the green screen before I've included a few quick tutorials below which should be helpful in situating you in premiere. You'll use jpegs of your artist's works behind the layer of video that we shot yesterday. Please have at least a draft ready for next class and schedule a zoom with me for one-on-one assistance. I also have six tutors on standby waiting to help you. I've included that link here.

OCTOBER 20 - Experimental Film
In this project we will explore the many skill sets needed to produce visuals narrative and the sonics required to produce a short film. In phase one of his project we will work systemically and include elements of chance in our work
Students will work on three films as a collaboration.
Each one of the films will require one student to create the visuals one student to create the narrative/voice over track and another student to create the soundtrack.
Each segment will be 60 seconds in length and will be assembled without any further editing.
We will then rotate groups so each student gets a chance to create the visuals, the narrative, and the soundtrack.
The only pre-planning will be on theme. Group will decide on a mood or concept for the piece and then separate and create the elements.
In the second phase of the project we will do something similar but with more direct collaboration. The three person team you assemble will create one more short experimental film but will communicate throughout the process and can work synchronously on it.
The effectiveness of this project hinges on every student in class working from historical precedent. I will introduce several concepts during my presentation and your homework will be to view several video examples of experimental media works.

October 27 - Magazine Production
Today in class we reviewed the experimental film projects. We had some great moments show up on the screen. After the screening we talked about the creative possibilities and how to add new elements. The assignment for today was to take any of the clips from the Dropbox and assemble a new 60 second experimental film of your own design.
Dropbox file of clips from class - https://www.dropbox.com/sh/3akb6k09r5bz82s/AADSbLE804C4zRBqmnAch2J4a?dl=0
We added a few wrinkles to the assignment by exploring "blend modes" in the video editors. We also worked with keyframes to move visual elements on the screen over time. Once the new experimental films are done please post them to your website and be sure to write up a nice summary of what you learned while doing this project. I think most people have created a page specifically for experimental films on their site.
Moving on from experimental film into magazine production now.
In class we examined time magazines and did a little analysis of the intent of its commercial platform. As we could see by the ads we removed there wasn't much editorial content left. We assembled a collage of those ads. The pictures are in the Google photos collection below.

The next assignment is going to be creating our own class magazine. Every student will have four pages to design with the content of their choice. We created a word cloud in class. An image of that is also posted in the Google photos bin.
For next week please have a draft of your four pages. You can use any media you'd like or any editing software like in-design, photoshop, illustrator, affinity designer or scissors, paper and glue.
As an inspirational guide I handed out and Adbuster's magazine to everyone in class.
Please check out the design of the magazine and use it as a reference for some ideas on how to lay out your pages.
What should be on those pages you ask?
typically in this assignment I asked students to do a two-page layout of their main feature story. This can be a personal topic that you would like to reflect on. I would like you to have two references and or quotes from professional sources that are speaking about the topic you're exploring. The layout of the page is completely up to you but should contain some images pertinent to the topic. You can filter them, draw them, steal them, whatever it takes to make them visually interesting.
For the other pages
One of them will be what we call a subvertisement. In this single page you'll want to create a satirical look at a facet of our commercial culture. Adbuster's magazine is full of these examples.
Posted a few below. There is also a link to past projects from this class as a reference.
The fourth page can be an artistic statement or examples of your artwork. It could be a page that serves as a statement about what you learned in the class or how your way of thinking may have changed about creating media because of it. Not sure if everyone created a poster for 102 but it can be similar to that and that it can show screenshots and examples on with your artist statement.
You do not have to mention me on that page. ; )

November 3
This week the class was broken up into three production groups. Here is the link to the Google document with the description of the group responsibilities and the action plan for the rest of the semester. For next week everyone is to bring in their 80% completed magazine pages for critique.
Each group should be ready to present their plan for their project and we will begin shooting video clips for the group capstone.
Each group should be ready to present their plan for their project and we will begin shooting video clips for the group capstone.
November 10
Today in class the 80% drafts were due for the magazine and they were at about 0 to 40% which was fairly disappointing. We need these pages done by next class and I need them early that day so I can print out paper proofs that we can write up.
The exhibit planning team needs a functional demo of the graffiti projection by next class. That team should set up the projectors next class and be ready for installation.
Everyone needs to upload all of their digital files in a single folder into my Dropbox. I repeat you need to create a folder with all of your digital files for this class and upload it to my dropbox.
Capstone team can then take your high quality 1920x1080 video files and use them in their production. You should also upload high quality jpegs of your work. Please do not upload psd's.
