CLASS 2 - Sept 6
Please come to class ready to present your article and slides. We will produce the podcast live in studio with three cameras and your slide feed. You will be able to use your laptop at the desk but please practice your presentation before class.
Class 3 - Sept 13
SEND ME YOUR THESIS STATEMENT FOR THIS PROJECT VIA EMAIL - If you do not yet have a thesis, see the pinterest folder here -

For sept 13 please create a new presentation based on answering your question you created in class regarding AI.
- This should be a 300 word script based on the research and articles on your topic.
- Please use at least 2 quotes in your presentation.
- We will use the teleprompter so you can read directly from the screen.
- Please indicate the slide number that should be on-screen in your text.
- In revising our approach to the podcast series, let's refine our slideshows to have less text.
- Use more titles, screen caps, and images and have your speaking notes separate.
- Please write one question the host should ask you at the end of your presentation and have an answer ready. This kind of question is usually summative like, "How do we fix this?" "How do we get involved?" "What's next for this technology?"
- We will have to have a shared google doc again to make this work. Here is the new google slides document for your AI presentation. docs.google.com/presentation/d/1SWvJEGI5PwCf8NLDkA3CfboDml-PQrDLtHxVGf4si9s/edit?usp=sharing
- We will have new hosts so please consider volunteering for your panel.
SEPTEMBER 13 - AI Podcast 1
Hello Demtechies and good job today in producing your solo podcasts.
Please download the show intro from the Dropbox link
https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fo/npbtp6xzb63qpbu1wh8x3/h?rlkey=st3brd3zggfqxlnknv017nsnv&dl=0
Those of you that did not get your video file in class, please download your video file from that Dropbox links as well. You can choose to use the opening that I made with my voice over on it or you can make your own. It doesn't have to have narration in it. There are assets in the folder if you want to use them. Help yourself if you want to make a completely different future focus intro, have at it.
Once you've edited any errors or time out of your podcast, complete the timeline and export it, post it to YouTube and then post it to your portfolio page for this class.
Add your slides to your new videos from this week. Export your slides as jpgs from whatever you built them in and put them on top of your videos and stretch to time needed.
If you have not made a portfolio page for this class yet, please go to Weebly and start a site for the class. (CHOOSE THE PORTFOLIO/PERSONAL option)
You could create a page on an existing portfolio or your 102 site if you would like. You can also just go out and make a completely new page on a different program to try it out. Adobe Express has a website builder right inside which would be perfect for this class.
Your assignment for next week is to have that ready to present and I'd also like you to identify a couple of AI apps and create a small project. I will post a link to AI tools below and I'd like you to explore and see what is possible. Try something that challenges yourself. But don't make it so big that you can't complete it for next class.

September 27 - AI Assisted Project Part 1
In today's class we looked at the results of a few of the experimental film projects. Please finish your assigned segments of the film so we can conclude the first phase of this project. Moving on from phase one to phase 2. You are now assigned to a group and your group can come up with any methodology you want to collaborate on another 60 second experimental film. You can come up with any parameters you like for division of labor. You can all collaborate on sounds music and visuals or you can have people individually responsible for those things.
- Please come to class with the film completed and posted to each of your portfolio websites. Your website should contain a detailed description of how you worked on this project and the method your group decided to pursue.
- Post any screen captures sketches, notes or references that you used in your process.
- Post the video to this site as well. Do the same for your first experimental film once it is posted to Dropbox.
Further Explanation
So what's this next nebulous crazy assignment all about? Well like anything in this class. It's really about exploration. There are no right or wrong answers but you have to produce questions. There are a couple of components that are mandatory for this assignment and then there are choices that have limitless options. The first thing is to think about an issue, idea, situation, trend, having to do with society, technology, the media or a similar broad theme.
The next component is to explore options in generative AI production. I don't know if this is actually second in line and the content dictates the form or vice versa? What that means is you can change your mind on technology to use and themes to explore.
Please, please please take the time and poke through my Pinterest board on AI. I stack it with all kinds of great content every day and there's so much to discover.
The things to look for in particular are the rundown videos with all of the different AI tools. Matt Wolf is a great resource as he explains the potential and operation of so many different AI apps. His site futuretools.io is going to be indispensable to you. You basically type in what you're hoping to do and it will give you tons of options.
Third part of this assignment is next week's presentation. We talked about the elevator speech and how to pitch an idea. Essentially you've got about 30 seconds to make a strong impact on someone. Give them the gist of what you're going for and "do the ask" .
Movies are pitched with things called log lines which is a general summary that compares what you want to do with what's already come before. Similarly, your presentation should outline the theme. Talk about how you're going to present it, what technology you're going to use, and then show your work by having these elements on a website that you can present to the class. Presentation should be less than 2 minutes.
That's it!
There's an honest level of work to be done here so don't try and cram it all in to the day before class.
Please keep working on those websites and updating them with all of the work from the semester. You can use the links to the experimental videos that I posted on the assignment page.
Email me any questions please!

October 4 - 11 AI Assisted Project Part 2
The AI assisted presentation project is well underway and today in class we looked at your work in progress. I love the themes and approaches and I think the feedback you gave each other was very helpful. I'm including a couple links below that might be of interest to you. Please feel free to click and explore.
For next week's class, we are presenting our final projects which should be in the three to four minute range.
I hope today was a good way to liberate your thinking on the project. They don't have to be a bout AI per se but they do have to be assisted by AI in some way now. You can go all in on that and do a fully AI production or you could take the elements you want and go from there.
The project needs to be on your website and presented from the website. So if it's a video please post it to YouTube and then embed it into your Weebly site. Below the project you need to have a robust description of how you created the project as well as a bibliography in which you post all of yo
bibliography in which you post all of your works cited and consulted. You also need to have a statement on where you used AI in the project along with links to the apps you used.
Have a great weekend. I'm really looking forward to seeing your results October 18!

The Subvertisement - begins October 25
The subvertisement project is a graphic or video design challenge in which students identify an issue in advertising and create a parody ad to fight propaganda or disinformation. As a class we agreed we were going to come in with three examples or more. You can take a shotgun approach and scatter your attention across many different topics or be laser focused on one topic with many different iterations.
You can use any medium you choose.
The origination of the idea should be your own meaning.
Don't use AI to generate ideas, but you can use it to help you achieve your results.

Subvertisement Part 2 - the Podcast
nov 1 - Subvertisement project update.
After today's demonstration of your three draft ideas, your next step is to choose one topic to focus on. You're going to expand that topic into a 300 word essay that brings at least two references in to make your points. Remember, we're interested in a factual representation of the issue and not just opinions. You can have a personal statement at the end of your piece, but everything in your essay should be factual.
Please watch the John Oliver video and notice how he and his staff tell the story by giving exposition about the topic and then they introduce contrary opinions and information from interviews and sources.
Select any of his others and watch a couple to get the idea.
This is investigative journalism dressed up as comedy and that really helps to bring the message home to people. There's a long tradition of this approach and it helps with tough topics.
Your essay will become a two page spread in our magazine or at least a fully developed page on our class site. Please continue to refine the graphic subvertisement to fit your topic and make it more direct as an illustration of your points. I offered a lot of suggestions on how to make some changes in your visual component, so if you're having trouble with that, reach out to me ASAP.
Please have your script ready to go next class. You should have graphics ready but you'll put them in your video in the editing phase, not live.
Don't be afraid to speak the truth.
Make it fun and informative and the kind of video you'd want your friends to see.
