February 5

Hello everyone, today in class we went over everyone's projects to date and chatted about how to update them for a more oblique approach. (You can also change your theme at this point) We scoured my Pinterest collections and started accumulating new ideas for aesthetic approaches to the next step. For next class, everyone was assigned a partner to talk to about their projects. The partners were instructed to listen to the project details and offer suggestions if warranted.
Next class have a first draft of a project (sketches, builds, sites, etc)
We will have a sandbox day next class where we spend time experimenting with options, tech, techniques etc.
Bring and tech or supplies you'd like to use with your project of things you think might be valuable to others.

Pay particular attention to the folders that start with "demtech" And "art and design"

Assignment - For Feb 5
Oblique Phase 2 - Career / Technology / Society / Self

Today we push the concepts and drafts of your Oblique 1 to a new level. The Oblique project moves toward creating media or artifact that represents the concepts from last class.

We watched this video on balancing ambition and happiness. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vhu5wkNr6FI

We talked about the external pressures placed upon us by parents, guidance counselors, family, career advisors etc.

Maybe you can imagine something ideal you'd like for yourself of maybe the negative side and show what you don't want?
Maybe you'd find some symbolism like mirrors or scrap books helpful?

Maybe Pla-doh would be the ideal medium to represent your brain?

A walk through Michael's craft store or home depot always brought new ideas into focus.

Please have the project on your site and ready to display in class.

Every week please update the project with a new description of your thought process. there should be a statement with each revision of the project. When you display it on your site be sure it's titled and has a description of what the project is about. (artist's statement)

Assignment - For January 29
Oblique 1 Transference of Thought
In this assignment students will create a project that shows your thought process on the content discussed in the Week 2 class session.
  • You can take ANY aspect of the content from class and make ANY representation of the concept.
  • The artifact you create can take any form and/or duration. It can be physical, virtual, analog or digital.
  • It shouldn't be a direct explanation of the topic. It should be, as Eno labeled the process, oblique.
  • Try the Oblique Strategies cards to push your idea.
  • One strategy we discussed in class was "transference" - the carryover or generalization of learned responses from one type of situation to another.  Bring ideas from other places into this project.
  • Work with some tools you know but don't be afraid to go new places with them.
  • Please post your project or media related to it on a new page on your class site. The page should be named Oblique 1 - Transference of Thought
  • In class we will go to the podcast suite and record you talking about the project with me.
