The questions above are important because we need to be in control of our technologies and not let them determine their own uses. We need to be very careful about technological determinism.

The Power Structures of Mass Media

Where do you get your information about the world? The country? politics? Local community? Are you walled off in your own information free zone?  Does ownership of the technology and the means of communication matter?

How do you participate in society?

Are you an active participant in your community? The world? How do you engage? Is all of your participation virtual? 

I'm so above it.

What are the unseen ways technology and communication affects your physical self? What about your mental process? How is it manipulated by the power of technology?

Toward a new understanding of yourself in a digital ecosphere 

In this course we will examine technology and its ever expanding impact on our mental space, our physical well-being and how to manage the effects of media, technology and power around us. 

Democratic Technologies is a class on experimental media technologies and methodologies. The content comes from research, readings and other media texts that serve as a springboard for creation of the new synthesis of ideas. Students will be introduced to cutting edge theories and artifacts created by artists working with new and combined technologies.

To facilitate this approach it's critical that student coming into the class have
​completed CM102 Intro to Multimedia Productions.
